Our Services
Every student receives individual attention. Our services begin with each student receiving one on one instruction in each of the areas. We keep a careful record of daily progress and are always ready to adjust services to meet the needs of each student. This may include additional tutoring sessions, specific tutoring techniques, individualized organizational skills.
Each student meets with a case manager on a weekly basis to review student progress. The student and case manager look at progress in each of the areas. Students needs and wants are addressed.
Although we have rolling admissions, we offer a limited enrollment so that we can continue to offer excellent services to each of our students. If we cannot offer a student immediate entrance, the individual will be placed on a waiting list until there is space available.
CAREER OPTIONS
Our staff meets with the student and family to develop an academic/career preparation plan. We assist the student with the admissions process to enroll in the program chosen, review any accommodations needed, communicate with the professors or supervisors as needed, and provide individual tutor sessions.
INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS
We work with the students in their apartment to learn organizational skills. In addition we teach the students how to clean and do their laundry. We help the students learn about healthy eating and how to prepare nutritious meals. We also teach the students how to navigate public transportation and to learn about the community.
FINANCE MANAGEMENT
We teach the young adult how to live on a budget. This includes purchasing grocery and other items. The student also learns how to pay bills and the importance of a good credit rating. In addition, the student learns about security and safety on the internet.
SOCIAL SKILLS
We offer the students individual meetings with the staff psychologist as well as large group sessions. The psychologist is available to help the student with learning and social issues with adults and their peers. We also plan social activities and encourage the students to participate.
EXTENSION PROGRAM
Our Extension Program has proven to be very successful for the student who does not need the intensive services of our residential and day programs. It is also a wonderful option for the student who lives in a dorm of a college in the Chicago area. The student meets with a case manager 2-4 hours a week to start. We schedule more time as needed. The case manager meets with the stu
dent at an agreed upon place such as the student's school, the library, or at our center. We get a copy of the syllabus and assignments for each class. We work with the staff and professors to help the student be successful. This program is very individualized.
We hold a preliminary meeting with the student, parents, and staff in order to properly assess the needs of the student to determine how to proceed. Not only do we lay out a plan for short term success, but we impart to the student the skills and tools necessary for
future success as well.

Here is a template of what we do during our regular meetings with the student:
- List what assignments are due and prioritize
- Review what assignments are complete and acceptable to the professor
- Help student make a plan to complete assignments on time
- Sit with student as necessary to keep him/her focused
- Work with student to make best use of time - this includes a good place to study, schedule breaks as needed, and good sleeping/eating habits
- Follow up with phone calls, emails, and/or texts to be sure student is staying on track
- Student must tell case manager when assignment is completed and turned in to professor
- Student must email a copy of written assignments for us to keep file in case it gets "lost"
- Case manager will look at written assignments and make suggestions as needed
- Help student make a plan to complete assignments on time
- Case manager will help student review for exams as needed
- If it is determined that tutoring would help the student, the case manager will walk the student to the tutoring center and help the student make arrangements for tutoring
- Case manager will follow up to make sure student is attending tutoring sessions
- Visit dorm room or apartment to assess the living conditions there; make suggestions for student success and help as needed. For example:
- Is student's desk organized?
- Does student have a desk and good lighting?
- Are there too many distractions to study there?
- Case manager may set up a white board or large printout with a list of current assignments
- Assess student hygiene and help student improve in this area if needed
- Assess any other issues that may be hindering the student's success such as poor sleeping patterns or video game distractions; suggestions will be made as to how to resolve these issues
